Australian singer/songwriter Eves Karydas made headlines recently in the music press for her open letter to the industry calling out inappropriate behaviours and stereotyping.

She’s now managing her own career and she feels more in control of her image, music, and affairs.

She’s the latest in a long line of young women who have taken a stand against sexualised and other inappropriate behaviours within the industry and I’m sure she won’t be the last to do so before those (mainly men) in positions of power finally change their behaviours.

Her latest single, Last Night When We Were Young, is the lead track from her up-coming EP, Wide Eyed, which is due to be released in late November.

Eves has been around the music scene for some time.

She released her first, self-titled, EP Fairytales way back in 2011, signed to the Dew Process label in 2014, and has released one album, Summerskin in 2018, which reached number 75 in the ARIA Top 100, and four EPs.

The first two EPs, Fairytales and Write, were released independently and the others via Dew Process/Universal Music.

Summerskin was ARIA certified Platinum and Reruns ARIA certified Gold so she’s done well so far.

Last Night When We were Young is a delightful song that presents a different sound for Eves.

The track starts slowly and deliberately sparce in its sound with Eves breathy vocals being supported only by a selectively plucked guitar.

It builds beautifully as the song progresses.

The song laments lost youth and innocence and in the light of her open letter it’s particularly poignant.

Last Night When we were Young also displays Eves growing maturity as a songwriter.

It’s full of atmospherics and rejects the regimentation of rhythm.

On the basis of this song the EP should be worth keeping an eye out for.
