Residents in Majura and Taylor are to be able to send their kids to school closer to home with more places promised for the coming years.

Announced by the Minister for Education, Yvette Berry, Majura Primary School is to be modernised and expanded to cater for up to 300 additional students, while a new high school is to be built in Taylor to complement an expansion of the Margaret Hendry school.

Ms Berry said three new Modular Learning Centres (MLCs) would also be installed and eight existing MLCs reused across the Territory’s school system.

“MLCs give us important flexibility across the system and allows us to further meet demand where they are needed,” Ms Berry said.

She said the new high school in Taylor, due to open in 2024, would cater for 800 students.

“The new high school in Taylor will offer general and specialist learning areas, small group programs, a library and an interactive learning centre,” Ms Berry said.

“Sport and recreation spaces for students and the community will include a double gymnasium/hall, performing arts spaces and hardcourts,” she said.

“Government is also delivering 600 more places at the Margaret Hendry school through an expansion that is already underway.”

The Minister said Margaret Hendry School’s new learning spaces, due for completion in time for the 2023 school year, would feature general learning settings, specialist learning settings including food technology, Science Technology Engineering Art and Maths, and small group programs.

“I’m also pleased to confirm that we are starting the master planning and preliminary design works on a second college for Gungahlin,” she said.

“I know this is an issue that is of interest to residents in Gungahlin and the first steps towards the delivery of a second college for Gungahlin are now underway.”
