Ancient books alive

Start the conversation

T’riffic news in the national capital this month with the Territory’s Archives successfully having a stack of ancient records about the city accepted internationally to join in with some of the highest of the world’s histories dating back to the earliest days of its existance.

According to the Archives, the ACT/NSW Border Survey Field Books have been recognised by UNESCO’s ‘Australian Memory of the World Register’, joining other amazing collections as the Journals of the First Fleet, Victoria’s papers about Ned Kelly and the Mabo Case Manuscripts.

“The field books record the detailed work carried out by the surveyors to map the border,” the Archives bragged.

They said it was helpful to remember that the surveys to define the Federal Capital Territory (now known as the Australian Capital Territory) weren’t the first to be done in the Canberra area.

“Yass and Queanbeyan had been well established long before a national capital was thought of,” they said.

Congratulations to the Canberra Archives. At least some people will get to know Canberra as the capital!

For sticky beaks, the ACT records are at this PS News link and UNESCO’s Register at this link.

Well trained!

Good news from NSW this month too with the State’s country TrainLink routes receiving ‘defibrillators’ to improve the safety of the travelling.

According to the NSW Minister for Trains, the defibrillators are being installed on all TrainLink timetabled coaches servicing routes of more than 4 hours.

“Defibrillators save lives,” the Minister said.

“Some travel long distances through remote parts of the State, which can make it difficult to access medical assistance quickly.”

The Chief Executive of NSW TrainLink said the idea of placing the defibrillators grew from an idea initiated internally by passionate staff.

“This will benefit coach customers, drivers, and rural and remote communities as a whole, providing even safer public transport.”

And if anyone would master the art of running trains it would be NSW’s TrainLink Chief Executive whose name is Peter Allaway.

Could anyone be better suited for the job than an Allaway to ensure the travelers are Allaboard!

Making us like them!

Handing over now to the ever handy Rama Gaind for another round of graceful gratis as Rama makes a happy reader happy by winning a free giveaway.

This week the prize is a copy of director Mayim Bialik’s DVD film As They Made Us starring Candice Bergen and Dustin Hoffman available to the first reader to name the Oscar winner starring in the film.

The answer was Dustin Hoffman of course and the first correct reader to excite the judges by being first out of PS News Barrel of Booty was Sue F from Tuggeranong in Canberra.

Congratulations Sue, and thanks to all the readers who entered the event. The DVD will be off to its new home shortly.

For another chance to join the prize-winning platoon of Rama’s Army, simply follow her resplendent reviews of the Book Statements from the Soul at this PS News link and/or the DVD The Locksmith at this link to put your wisdom to work.

You have to be in it to win it so good luck to all who are!

In tickets we trust

And while in the wonder world of Rama, she has asked PS-sssst! to clarify an important aspect of the fame and glory the readers who win free tickets should be aware of.

Following a call from a free ticket winner a little while ago – saddened because the movie had closed before he/she had seen it – Rama asked the following be passed on.

“The onus is on the film ticket winner to make sure they get to the theatre while the film is still there” Rama advised.

Advice passed on!

State of statements

And finally, a statement of advice that says it all:
