War Memorial plans changes to public spaces

The National Capital Authority (NCA) is calling for feedback on proposed changes to the Australian War Memorial’s Western Precinct Carpark and Sculpture Garden as part of the current redevelopment works.

Chief Executive of the NCA, Sally Barnes said the proposed change, which also modify Poppy’s Carpark, would include soft and hard landscaping elements, tree planting, sculpture relocations and lighting, as well as other works across the Australian War Memorial’s (AWM) precinct.

Ms Barnes said AWM’s Public Realm Works application included two design schemes.

“The first design scheme proposes to improve the existing Western Carpark by creating a new all-access pedestrian pathway that leads directly to the main entry of the Memorial,” Ms Barnes said.

“It further proposes to reposition plaques and statues to enhance visibility and make room for additions in the future,” she said.

“The proposal suggests it will preserve the formal open lawn character of the Western precinct through careful placement of trees and thorough consideration of sight lines.”

Ms Barnes said the second design scheme proposes to create a green landscape over the existing Poppy’s Carpark to allow trees and plants to grow close to Poppy’s Café.

“The application says the design will provide a counterpoint to the formal nature of the Western Precinct by installing bleacher seats and communal spaces where people can gather and interact,” the Chief Executive said.

“The curves to the pathway are intended to relate aesthetically to the curvaceous outline of an adjacent building as well as provide contrast and balance to the straight lines of Poppy’s Café’s architecture,” she said.

Ms Barnes said consultation on the two design schemes would be open until 9 December.
