For the first time … WIN … tickets to a movie screening all over Australia!

Director: Gina Prince-Bythewood, Sony Pictures.

Communicating the significance of an historical event of such epic proportions ― is one reason the silver screen exists!

Inspired by a true story that is not only extraordinary, but astonishing, The Woman King features deep emotion and huge action.

It is the remarkable story of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey (in today’s Benin, West Africa) from the late 1600s until the late 1800s.

Academy Award-winning actress Viola Davis (Fences, Doubt, The Help) is The Woman King. It follows her emotionally impressive journey as General Nanisca as she trains the next generation of recruits and readies them for battle against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life.

Davis says some things are worth fighting for. The story of the Agojie warriors spoke to her because it reflected her own journey of pride and self-acceptance, like that experienced by many women. To be sort of a prototype of what we deem as feminine.

Davis, who also co-produced the film, was inspired by female warriors with skills and a fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen.

This “culture had a unique duality.” As director Gina Prince-Bythewood points out “we have the ability to reshape what it means to be female, reframe femininity, reframe strengths.”

“These are real women who did something so superhuman, yet they were not superheroes. I just had to put these women on screen.”
