New threat prompts call from cyber security

Victorians are being urged to strengthen their email security, with the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) updating its email security guides in response to a continually emerging threat.

Releasing its updated guides, ACSC said everyone across the country needed to be alert to criminals trying to fool them into making false payments or giving up details that could make them easy targets for cyber crime.

“Whether you’re an individual who uses email for online banking and shopping, or a business relying on email to manage payments and invoicing, you should know about Business Email Compromise (BEC),” the ACSC said.

“BEC is a type of email scam in which an attacker targets a person or business to steal data or sensitive information, then attempts to defraud victims by fooling them into making payments or changing banking details by impersonating trusted senders, including employees, vendors or companies,” it said.

“Strong email security can help protect sensitive private information, business operations and customers.”

The ACSC said its updated guides, Email Attacks Prevention, Email Attacks Emergency Response, Securing Google and Microsoft Accounts and How to Check Your Email Account Security, now included simple steps and visual information to help Australians keep their email secure.

The Centre said people could also test their ability to spot scams with its email security quiz on its BEC website landing page.

The ACSC’s updated guides and the quiz can be accessed at this PS News link.
