Cyber experts warn on Iranian threat

The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) is urging Governments and private organisations alike to be alert to continued Iranian State-sponsored cyber threats.

The ACSC said the malicious cyber activity was conducted by Advanced Persistent Threat actors, assessed to be affiliated with the Iranian Government’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

It said the IRGC was an Iranian Government Agency tasked with defending the Iranian Regime from perceived internal and external threats.

The ACSC warning follows a new joint Cyber-security Advisory released by the Centre, in collaboration with international cyber security partners.

“The IRCG group is actively targeting a broad range of victims, including some Australian organisations,” the ACSC said.

“Australian organisations are encouraged to review the technical advisory and detailed indicators of compromise associated with this group’s activities, as well as the recommended mitigations organisations can implement to bolster their cyber defences and protect against these attacks now,” it said.

“Organisations can prepare for and mitigate against potential cyber threats immediately, by patching and updating systems, implementing multi-factor authentication, enforcing back-up policies and procedures, along with other vital mitigation.”

The ACSC said the joint Cyber-security Advisory was the result of an analytic effort among the ACSC, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Cyber-security and Infrastructure Security Agency, the United States National Security Agency, Cyber Command Cyber National Mission Force, the Department of the Treasury, the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, and the United Kingdom’s National Cyber Security Centre.

The joint Cyber-security Advisory can be accessed at this PS News link.
