City Services has unveiled a new strategy setting the direction for the future of play spaces in the ACT.

Releasing its Better places to play: ACT Play Space Strategy, City Services said community feedback had helped to develop and refine the Strategy.

“The Strategy will guide the future management of our play spaces and ensure an equitable, inclusive, safe, diverse and engaging mix of play opportunities across Canberra,” the Directorate said.

Welcoming the new Strategy, Minister for Transport and City Services, Chris Steel said play was essential to the cognitive, physical and social development of children and young people.

“It is a way to explore the world and develop a sense of self and place – in our environments, our communities and our neighbourhoods,” Mr Steel said.

“The new strategy guides the forward planning, delivery and management of more than 500 playgrounds across the ACT,” he said.

“It creates a framework to deliver an equitable, inclusive, diverse, safe and engaging mix of play opportunities across Canberra.”

Mr Steel said the Strategy set out six key objectives, including to develop play spaces for better health, wellbeing and connectedness, and to keep play spaces safe and welcoming.

The Minister said the Strategy also looked to make play spaces for everyone, improve the quality and diversity of play experience, and foster sustainable play spaces that were resilient to a changing climate.

He said that under the Strategy, City Services would also partner with community to make better play spaces.
