The Department for Environment and Water (DEW) has reported on the State’s largest nature play space at Glenthorne National Park-Ityamaiitpinna Yarta, declaring the playground was expected to be open in the coming months.

According to DEW, the play space will incorporate Kaurna sculptures, an escarpment zone with a large tree tower slide, caves, a flying fox, sound sculptures and a fossil dig zone.

It said the project would prioritise inclusiveness with elements accessible for all ages and abilities, including the mobility impaired.

“It includes easy access to car parking, toilets, picnic facilities and walking trails,” the Department said.

“Kaurna designs will also be incorporated and will be reflected in the space,” it said.

It said the City of Marion provided $2.2 million towards the project with the SA Government providing the land and funding for the main building, including the play space, roads, car parking, toilets, heritage upgrade works and trails.

Local company Neo Infrastructure is the project’s managing contractor for the main works and is overseeing the rollout of the nature play space, along with Climbing Tree Creations and the Department.

Another local company, Trail Solutions Australia, has been chosen to construct the class two trails outside the main visitor hub area, and Team Civil has undertaken watercourse restoration works in the park to reinstate ‘Glenthorne Creek’.

The Department for Environment and Water said the play space was located within the Glenthorne Visitor Hub, spread across 50,000 square metres of land.

It said it expected the nature play space to open in the coming months.
