The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is leading the recruitment of almost 180 data graduates for placements across the Australian Public Service (APS) as part of the Australian Government Graduate Program Data Stream.

ABS said one application to the Program would open the door to 24 Federal Government Agencies, including the ABS; Australian Taxation Office; Australian Institute of Health and Welfare; Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet; Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade; and the Department of Health.

“The Australian Government Graduate Program Data Stream provides a permanent full-time role and meaningful work from day one,” ABS said.

“Data graduates have the opportunity to work in all aspects of Government, including policy development, research, program management and service delivery,” it said.

“Roles are varied, as part of the application, applicants will be asked to indicate their preference for one of three data streams: Data Analyst, Data Scientist and Statistical Methodology Specialist.”

ABS said Data Analysts identified relationships between data items and used their judgement, as well as real-world insights, to tell the stories behind data in an engaging and meaningful way.

It said Data Scientists were responsible for discovering, experimenting with and wrangling data, as well as leading the use of new data sources, methods and products to meet the changing information needs of customers.

“Fields of study could include computer science, mathematics, science, engineering or other disciplines with a strong quantitative background,” it said.

ABS said Statistical Methodologists provided advice to clients and identified, researched, implemented and maintained a range of innovative statistical solutions.

It said fields of study for this stream could include statistics, mathematics, econometrics, cognitive science, behavioural science, or other fields with a strong quantitative discipline.

ABS said applications were open until 11 April.
