The Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate (TCCS) has begun work improving the city centre, extending the city bus interchange in Alinga Street and introducing new traffic arrangements.
In a statement, the Directorate said the work involved the installation of two new bus shelters for platforms 1 and 2 on Alinga Street west of Northbourne Avenue as well as new bike rails.
“This will improve the amenity of the area while also providing protection from the elements,” TCCS said.
“These works follow on from the expansion of the City Interchange undertaken to complement the introduction of the new bus network and integration with light rail.”
It said other works previously undertaken included repair work to the road surface on Alinga Street as well as removal and repositioning of some street furniture such as bins and seats to improve pedestrian access.
“The works will also complement the upgrades to the road verge on Northbourne Avenue and the Alinga Street light rail stop,” it said.
“Expanding the city interchange across to Alinga Street west will ensure better integration with the Alinga Street light rail stop for customers interchanging to bus services.”
The Directorate said that as part of its work, Alinga Street would become ‘bus and local traffic only’ between Northbourne Avenue and Moore Street/West Row.
It said this would improve access to public transport for residents while also improving safety for pedestrians, cyclists, buses and motorists on Northbourne Avenue.
“Under these new traffic arrangements vehicles leaving Odgers Lane will still be allowed to turn left onto Alinga Street,” TCCS said.
Work is expected to be completed over the next few weeks.
