UNITED STATES: Google Division to serve public sector

Google has announced it will spin off its public sector-focused business line from Google Cloud to launch an independent Division focused purely on the United States public sector.

The new Division is to be a separate legal entity from Google Cloud, operating as its own independent company with a board of advisers.

Chief Technology Officer of Google Cloud, Will Grannis will lead the Division until a permanent Chief Executive is selected.

Mr Grannis (pictured) said the Division would have a full complement of business functions and capabilities dedicated specifically to the public sector.

Chief Executive of Google Cloud, Thomas Kurian said the organisation was “doubling down our significant commitment to serving the US public sector”.

Mr Kurian said the initiative gave public sector organisations something they had asked for – an alternative to the “legacy” cloud providers who had historically dominated the Government’s cloud market, like Amazon and Microsoft.

“Public sector customers want more diversity in the cloud vendors who serve them,” Mr Kurian said.

“They want help to move away from legacy providers, help to modernise their core technology and to advance their innovation agendas,” he said.

“They see Google as a really advanced engineering company that has technology that can really change how they use technology to deliver services to be more efficient, to enable new capability. Choice has always been important to them.”

Google has been increasing its business with the public sector in recent years leading up to this decision.

At the Federal level, it has won large tech contracts on both the civilian and Defence sides, with the Department of Energy, US Postal Service and Department of Veteran Affairs, as well as the US Air Force, Navy and Defence Innovation Unit.
