Public Servants across the State can now access comprehensive best practice guidance on commissioning public art, with Create NSW launching a new toolkit for State Agencies and local government.

Interim Chief Executive of Create NSW, Annette Pitman said the new NSW Government Public Art Toolkit would help NSW lead the way in public art commissions, “ensuring best practice principles can be applied to produce successful, high-quality projects, particularly Aboriginal public art projects”.

“Public art makes art part of the everyday, accessible to all,” Ms Pitman said.

“By creating a meaningful focal point in public spaces, public art helps build community connection to places, and contributes many positive social, cultural and environmental impacts,” she said.

“Equipped with this new toolkit, NSW and local government agencies can have greater confidence to create a lasting legacy of valuable public art.”

Ms Pitman said the Toolkit was illustrated with case studies and contained expert specialist information, best practice in policy, commissioning, construction and engagement with artists.

Designed to be user-friendly, she said the interactive guide included quick reference links to each step of the process, from planning, commissioning, implementing to maintaining public art throughout its lifespan.

“The toolkit also identifies the vital contribution and involvement of Aboriginal communities in the development of public art on Aboriginal land,” the Interim Chief Executive said.

“Five key principles for engagement are outlined: cultural authority and agency; recognising rights and maintaining culture; prior informed consent and consultation; integrity of Aboriginal culture; and attribution and sharing benefits,” Ms Pitman said.
