Civic Square has been transformed into an open-air ice rink to entertain families during the school holidays and boost business in Canberra’s CBD.

Welcoming the ice rink’s opening, Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the City Renewal Authority was delivering its biggest winter program to date, with unique experiences, pop-up bars and cosy spaces featured in this year’s Winter in the City campaign.

Mr Barr said Libraries ACT, Canberra Museum & Gallery, Craft ACT, Canberra Centre and Canberra Theatre Centre were all participating in the city’s winter program.

“The City Renewal Authority is coordinating the delivery of its biggest winter program yet, to encourage Canberrans to spend more time in the city centre – shopping, eating, being entertained and socialising with a target to attract over 20,000 visitors to the city across the event period,” Mr Barr said.

He said Winter in the City attractions included the ice rink (until 17 July), food vendors and fireplaces, Winter dRINKs Bar at Canberra Theatre Centre Terrace, an ‘80s party, as well as mulled wine and indoor snowfall at the Canberra Centre’s Winter Village.

Chief Executive of the City Renewal Authority, Malcolm Snow said this year’s Winter in the City was the perfect opportunity to plan a day or night out in the city centre.

“We look forward to welcoming Canberrans and visitors to enjoy the ice rink, dRINKs bar, exhibitions, music and events,” Mr Snow said.

“In 2021, Winter in the City attracted 20,000 people into the city centre’s restaurants, bars and events, and this year will be even bigger.”
