South Australians can delve into State Government history this week, with the State Records of South Australia hosting a range of events and exhibitions for History Festival 2022 (1-31 May).

Launching its Festival program, State Records said the events included everything from behind-the-scenes tours of the archives to stories of theft and embezzlement plucked from Government records.

State Records said the program kicked off with the Stories from the Archives, from Foundation to Federation exhibition (2 May-17 June) at the University of Adelaide.

“State Records of South Australia is the oldest Government archives in Australia and holds some of the State’s most important historical documents,” State Records said.

“The event is a collaboration of the Department of Historical and Classical Studies at the University of Adelaide, State Records, and the University of Adelaide Library.”

It said Listen to Stories from the Archives, from Foundation to Federation, a public lecture on the significance of the documents on display, would accompany the exhibition.

The Authority said the event would be held from 1pm-2pm on 9 and 23 May at the University of Adelaide.

State Records said stories of theft and embezzlement of “varying daring and value” had been plucked from each institution’s archive, and would feature in The Grand Embezzle-Off from 11am to noon on Thursday (5 May) at the State Library of South Australia.

It said small group tours would also be held in its Gepps Cross Research Centre on 13 and 16 May, 10am-12pm and 2pm-4pm respectively.

“Small group tours will discover how records are kept, preserved and made accessible to the public,” it said.

State Records said other events included Reconciliation: Tracking Family in Public Records on 26 May, and On the Record: Stories of Crime From State Records and National Archives on 27 May.
