The Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) has launched its Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), outlining how it plans to create a culturally safe workplace and foster deeper connections with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

In the Tribunal’s Reflect RAP, President of AAT, Justice Fiona Meagher said AAT’s focus in developing the RAP was on laying the foundations for future reconciliation by striving to become an ‘employer of choice’ for First Nations peoples.

“We seek to create the right environment to take practical steps with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as our members and staff, users and suppliers,” Justice Meagher said.

“This RAP is itself a practical step for the AAT to improve access to justice for all Australians.”

She said the Tribunal was required by law to provide a mechanism of review that was accessible, fair, just, economical, informal, quick and proportionate.

She said that each year, several hundred people who applied to the AAT for review of a Government decision identified as First Nations peoples.

“We believe this may understate the number of First Nations peoples who use our services,” Justice Meagher said.

“There is also evidence that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are less likely to apply to the AAT for a review in the first place, particularly if they live in remote communities,” she said.

“The AAT acknowledges the access to justice issues that First Nations peoples face and is seeking to address this in our reconciliation work.”

Justice Meagher said the Tribunal had already begun planning the implementation of the 13 actions in its RAP and how it would strengthen its commitment to reconciliation.

“The AAT has not had a RAP since 2017, although we have undertaken actions to support and recognise the rich culture and diversity of First Nations peoples upon whose lands we all live and work,” she said.
