Women in spotlight on agriculture safety

SafeWork NSW is shining a light on safety for farming families with events to take place across regional towns until 15 July.

Welcoming the free events, Minister for Fair Trading, Eleni Petinos said SafeWork’s Women in Agriculture Lunch and Learn series would provide a space where women could gain valuable farm safety knowledge through shared experiences.

“After the success of last year’s inaugural sessions, we have almost doubled the number of events this year to expand our reach to more women across regional towns,” Ms Petinos said.

“Tragically, farming accounts for one in every five worker deaths,” she said.

“That’s why these events are so important for the women at the centre of farming families – to provide essential safety resources and encourage safe farming practices.”

Ms Petinos said the Lunch and Learn series would cover issues such as working near electricity, emergency preparedness and response, safety around farm vehicles, and at-risk workers and contractors.

Minister for Women, Bronnie Taylor said women had a huge influence on improved health and safety outcomes of rural workplaces.

“Farming workplaces bring their own unique set of safety challenges as both a workplace and the family home,” Mrs Taylor said.

“Women are often the centre of making business decisions, running the farm, and managing family life throughout the day, playing a critical role in building a culture of safety.”
