QPS road safety programs win awards

The Australian Road Safety Foundation has recognised two road safety programs involving the Queensland Police Service (QPS).

The Braking the Cycle program received the Indigenous Program Award while the Logan Tyre Deflation Device trial received the State Government Programs Award.

Deputy Police Commissioner, Paul Taylor said the programs provided strong benefits to the community beyond creating safer roads.

“The Braking the Cycle program supports and mentors young people who, due to financial hardship or social barriers, would otherwise be unable to achieve the mandatory 100 hours of supervised driving,” Deputy Commissioner Taylor said.

“It helps young people to be safer drivers, increases social inclusion and improves participation in the workforce.”

He also praised the partnership between Logan City Council and the QPS, working together to identify safer sites to deploy tyre deflation devices.

“The team has physically identified and mapped numerous sites across Logan City,” Deputy Commissioner Taylor said.

“By utilising a sophisticated mapping system, officers are now able to get information and deploy to these sites more efficiently. This reduces the amount of time offenders are on the road network posing a risk to others.”

He noted the QPS also had a number of other worthy entrants in the Australian Road Safety Awards and commended officers across Queensland for their commitment to reducing road trauma.

“We can’t reduce road trauma alone, it takes the whole community coming together to support and encourage the behaviour of their family, friends and peers on our roads,” the Deputy Commissioner said.

“However, it ultimately comes down to the individual making good decisions.”
