The release of the Shanghai Rankings’ Global Ranking of Academic Subjects for 2020 has the University of Queensland (UQ) as the only Australian university to have at least four subjects ranked in the top 10 worldwide.

UQ is now ranked fourth in the world for nursing, up from ninth last year.

Biotechnology has risen up the ranks by two places to seventh, UQ is ranked eighth in Hospitality and Tourism Management, and Geography leapt 20 places to 10th.

In addition, UQ is ranked in the top 50 worldwide in another 11 subjects, including Mining and Mineral Engineering, Water Resources, Public Health, Ecology and Psychology.

President and Vice-Chancellor of UQ, Peter Høj said the university was the top-ranked Australian university in at least three subjects, and shared top honours in another two.

“These strong results build on the university’s move to its highest-ever position in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) announced last year, sitting at 54th globally,” Professor Høj said.

“Results in the field of Life Sciences were strong with all subjects ranked in the top 100.”

He said four out of five of UQ’s medical science subjects, more than two thirds of engineering subjects and a number of social science subjects were also in the top 100.

He said UQ was also ranked in the top two nationally in at least 15 subjects.
