How could I resist? Serina’s personal message said: “stay joyful” — and I did. Reading the essential handbook to living frugally, mindfully and with real joy on a budget proves there’s no harm in being frugal. Be proud of it. Besides, who knew frugality could be so much fun?

Once upon a time, thrift and frugality were celebrated as virtues – not anymore. When did ‘frugal’ become such a dirty word? It’s time to reclaim it!

In her introduction Serina points out that her “outwardly flamboyant life is merely a front: I am a frugalista”. So, what is a frugalista?

“A frugalista is someone who lives the good life, the fashionable life, while still living frugally – someone who is mindful of the small things, avoids waste and lives consciously. A frugalista prioritises things like reducing food waste and negotiating the best deals, and can identify what is a need rather than a want. A frugalista isn’t a slave to department store fashion and instead appreciates what they have and makes the most from it.”

Serina’s vision is to encourage people to become frugalistas – spending less and saving more (with joy) on the path to financial empowerment. In case you are wondering, a frugalista is someone who always looks fashionable even on a budget.
