The $37 million Stromlo Leisure Centre in Molonglo is on track to be completed by mid-2020, the Minister for Sport and Recreation has announced.

The Minister, Yvette Berry said the Centre would be a welcome addition for more than 100,000 Canberrans living in Weston Creek, Woden and the Molonglo Valley.

“The Stromlo Leisure Centre will feature an extensive aquatic centre and gym that will be available to this fast-growing community,” Ms Berry said.

She said YMCA NSW – which currently operates the Gungahlin Leisure Centre, Lakeside Leisure Centre and Canberra Olympic Pool – had been awarded the contract to operate the new centre following a competitive tender process.

“Facilities like this are so important for bringing active communities together, especially in an area like this with lots of young families,” Ms Berry said.

“The Centre will be accessible to all Canberrans and host to a range of activities like learn to swim classes, aqua aerobics, and various types of warm water and gentle exercise programs.”

She said the centre design had been shaped by extensive community consultation.

“It features a 50-metre pool, program pool, leisure pool, toddlers’ pool, splash park, gym, creche and space for many members of the community to enjoy,” Ms Berry said.

“The facility is on track for hand over in the later part of the first half of this year, and the Territory will work with YMCA NSW on confirming an opening date to announce soon,” she said.
