Congratulations in order this week to the many military veterans across the country who have managed, once again, to have one of their own elevated to the second highest public service position in the nation.
Congratulations too to returned serviceman David Hurley for his appointment as Governor-General, representing Australia’s Head of State, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II when she is not in the country.
His Excellency General Hurley was Chief of the Defence Force from 2011 until his retirement in 2014 and follows another Chief of the Defence Force, General Sir Peter Cosgrove who was GG from 2014 and CDF from 2002 to 2005.
General Hurley was also Governor of NSW from 2014 to May of this year.
The awes have it!
More querulous questions querying the quality the English language now with Tony C of the federal Department of Human Services responding to our ‘Lost Activities’ with an actively lost concern of his own.
“I’ve often wondered about awe….” Tony confided in an unconfidential comment
“When you inspire just a bit of awe, you’re awesome, but once you reach capacity, you’re awful!?
“How does that work??!” he asked!!
Not known, Tony, but a fabulous PS-sssst! Pack of PS News goodies (book, pen/torch and T-shirt) for your contribution.
Let’s put your question to our learned readership to see if someone does know. Answers (or comments) on Tony’s question can be sent to [email protected] with the most accurate (or entertaining) responses scoring a fabulous PS-sssst! Pack too!
Rieu-lly speaking
And while we’re on the subject of fabulous PS News prizes, the jury is in on Rama Gaind’s marvelously musical giveaway of movie tickets to the screening of melodious maestro André Rieu’s 2019 Maastricht Concert Shall we Dance? being shown nationally on 27 and 28 July.
The redoubtable Rama arranged for local tickets for readers of each of the nine editions of PS News to win which means there are nine winners across the nation and they are: Martin D from the Department of Defence in Canberra, Christine C from the NSW Department of Family and Community Services, Paul W from the Victorian Electoral Commission, Lesleigh M from Queensland’s Department of Housing and Public Works,Gracie L from South Australia’s Country Health, Johnathon N from WA’s Department of Justice, Sasha M of the Department of Education Tasmania, Gwen T from Queensland’s Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy, but working in the in NT and John C, retired, from the Education Directorate in the ACT.
Congratulations to all our foot-tapping winners. Your free double tickets will be on their way shortly.
Giving away again!
And if that string of lucky PS News winners isn’t enough, Rama’s regular giveaway has another swag of spoils to spread among readers, this time copies of the potentially life-changing book on finance management Make Money Simple Again by Bryce Holdaway and Ben Kingsley.
To be one of the four lucky winners of a copy of the book, all we had to do was to tell Rama how long Holdaway and Kingsley say it would take each month to achieve financial peace, the answer to which is 10 minutes.
And the first correct entries to emerge from the PS News Barrel of Booty were from Karen G from the federal Department of Health, Kerry F of the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Scott S from the national Department of Agriculture, and Andrew G from the Commonwealth Department of Human Services.
Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to everyone for taking part. The prize books – complete with accompanying PS-sssst! Packs – will be on their way shortly.
For another chance to join Rama’s army of well-off winners, simply follow this link to this week’s giveaway and give it a go.
Good luck!
Write turn
As a footnote to Rama’s richly rewarding book giveaway this week, one of the two books on offer has been personally autographed by the author, Gihan Perera.
Another reason to join in the action!
Statistical stutter
And finally, a lesson from the book of ‘Horses for Courses’ now in which a well-meaning editor jumps the gun to swoop on stunning statistics to report a surge in subscribers when a wiser move would have been to wait patiently for the experts to complete their mathematical magic.
And so it is that the joyful, if amateur, report last week that PS News welcomed 912 new subscribers to the fold in June was seriously wide of the mark, the correct number coming in at the much more eyebrow-raising 1,832.
So for the 900-plus subscribers not acknowledged last week we firstly repeat all those nice welcoming words we shared with our new subscribers last week and secondly apologise for leaving you out of the event.
We suspect you know who you are and we are really humbled by your support.
Till next week.
