The first recipients of Scout Badges awarded by the ACT State Emergency Service (ACTSES) for dedication to the community have been presented with their awards.

Announced by the Minister for Emergency Services, Mick gentleman, the new program was developed jointly by Scout’s ACT and ACTSES to encourage youngsters to learn valuable, real-world skills that would keep them safe during an emergency.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Mick Gentleman said that in order to earn the achievement badge the Scouts had to show an understanding of ACTSES and its role in protecting the community.

He said Scouts also need to complete activities designed to help them during an emergency including first aid, navigation, knots, leadership and working in a team.

“The first of the achievement badges can be earned by Joeys (5-8 years old) and Cubs (8-12 years old) and this will soon be rolled out to Scouts of all ages in Canberra,” Mr Gentleman said.

“The ACTSES and Scouts ACT partnership will continue to build connections with younger Canberrans and give them an opportunity to use their learned skills to contribute to a more resilient community.”

Mr Gentleman congratulated the first Scouts ACT Joeys and Cubs on their achievement and for successfully earning their ACTSES Scout Badge.
