A total of 20 State public schools have been selected to take part in the inaugural Minister’s Innovation Challenge.

The Year 8 students will compete in teams to develop solutions to local problems.

Minister for Education and Training, Sue Ellery said the chosen schools were representative of all eight education regions across Western Australia, providing an opportunity to a broad range of Year 8 students to participate.

She said the Minister’s Innovation Challenge was part of the Career Learning Toolkit developed to address the need for students to learn about different career options.

β€œThe students will be supported by their schools and local industry mentors throughout the challenge, which is the first step in an ongoing journey of design thinking and learning for WA public school students,” Ms Ellery said.

“Almost 50 schools applied to participate in the inaugural Challenge, which demonstrates there is a strong interest from school students in innovation and design learning. I look forward to seeing the creative solutions the students develop to tackle a local issue.”

The Challenge is facilitated by Generation Entrepreneur and will run for four weeks during Term Four, with each team’s final pitch to be showcased online.

The three top-ranked teams will receive cash prizes totalling $6,000.
