The Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages is working to replace crucial identification documents, lost by Wooroloo residents during the recent bushfire.
Registrar, Alison Jackson said the Registry was reissuing birth, marriage and change-of-name certificates free of charge to people whose homes and belongings were destroyed in the devastating bushfire.
Ms Jackson said applications to replace documents were referred to the Registry by the Department of Communities’ Disaster and Emergency Support Services.
“The Department of Communities verifies bushfire victims before referring them to us and other relevant Government Agencies for assistance,” Ms Jackson said.
“Births, Deaths and Marriage Registries across Australia participate in a national initiative to assist people in situations where a natural disaster has been declared.”
She said the WA Registry liaised with State and Territory counterparts to obtain certificates of events registered interstate.
“We have previously provided this assistance to victims of the Yarloop and Roleystone bushfires, as well as people affected by the 2019 bushfires in NSW,” the Registrar said.
“We are pleased to be able to help those people who have lost everything in the fire.”
She said getting fresh copies in a timely manner gave recipients a head start in providing primary ID documents to obtain critical services.
People seeking to apply for certificates should contact the Department of Communities on 0417 915 216 or by email at [email protected].
