ACT Policing and the ACT Emergency Services Agency (ACT ESA) are reminding Canberrans to stay safe amid the dangers of heavy rainfall which they say can create hazardous and unpredictable flood waters.
Issuing the reminder, ACT Policing said people should avoid roads where flash flooding and excess water were prevalent as those waters were often deeper, and flowed faster, than they appeared.
“You should never drive, walk, or ride through flood water,” ACT Policing said.
It said Coppins Crossing, Point Hut Crossing and Oaks Estate Crossing had been closed due to flooding.
“Water levels in these areas are increasing daily and Canberrans are urged to avoid these areas,” the Police said.
“Water activities such as swimming, kayaking and fishing should be avoided until waterways become safe,” it said.
ACT ESA said people should be ready and plan ahead for the possibility of flooding.
It said steps to prepare families and homes included:
* Keep properties well maintained – gutters, downpipes and drains should be kept clear;
* Talk to children about the dangers of floodwaters and educate them not to go near floodways or play in storm drains (even during dry weather);
* Be aware of signs of flash flooding in local areas –heavy rainfall, rushing or pooling water in low-lying areas;
* Make a FloodSafe plan so family members know what to do when flooding occurs;
* Prepare an emergency kit for your home and/or business;
* Get to know the local area and identify possible evacuation routes; and
* Know who to call – keep local emergency numbers handy.
ACT Policing also reminded Canberrans to drive according to the wet and slippery road conditions.
“Slow down, turn on headlights and increase stopping distances,” it said.
