We’ve gone all existential this week on the Hoot podcast as David Murtagh and Genevieve Jacobs ask deep and meaningful questions about when a lie is not a lie and when can you simply change your mind.

We start, though, with more extraordinary revelations about the news story that never stops giving (or tarnishing reputations). Former Director of Public Prosecutions Shane Drumgold is taking action in court over the fallout from the Lehrmann matter and all sorts of extraordinary stories are still emerging (and that’s before we get to the outcome of multiple defamation trials).

Listen on other platforms:

As everyone involved prioritises the media above the courts, it begs the question, who can call themselves a serious person any more?

Allegations are also flying on all sides about the government’s decision on Stage 3 tax cuts.

Was it a broken promise when the PM changed tack? Was it a lie or a sensible readjustment? And when do politicians have the right to simply change their minds? Or was Lenny Bruce right? In politics, there is never a lie because there is never any truth.

And as literally millions of lottery dollars lie in wait for a couple of lucky Canberra punters, we ponder what you’d do if you won a million dollars, $5 million or crack the biggest lottery ever in Australia and walk away with an eye-watering $200 million (for Dave, it might mean he finishes his renovations).

The Hoot appears every week on Riotact and wherever you get your podcasts, including Apple and Spotify. Have a listen, tell us what you think and rate us.
