Veterans and their families are to be supported better with the opening of a new grants program to help them connect with their communities.

Unfolding the new Veterans Grants Program, Minister for Veterans and Seniors, Emma Davidson said the grants were personalised to the individual to deliver real outcomes that helped them stay connected and supported.

“Canberrans thrive when they have opportunities to pursue their interests and be engaged with their peers,” Ms Davidson said.

“We know from the 2021 Census data that the ACT has the highest number of current and former serving veterans but also that they, and their families, can face unique challenges adapting to civilian life,” she said.

“These grants support the individual needs of our veterans’ community – to build and foster relationships across the community, develop skills to live well and actively participate.”

Ms Davidson said the launch of the grant program, open until 26 September, coincided with Legacy Week (From now to 3 September) and would provide up to $10,000 for initiatives for veterans and their families.

Legacy Week is an annual event to show support for widows, widowers and children of people who have served the country.

She said the Grant Program prioritised activities that promoted the inclusion and participation of veterans; increased communication and education on services and supports for veterans; focused on supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander veterans; and encouraged connection and supported COVID-19 response and recovery.
