New travel survey to direct city transport

The Transport Canberra and City Service Directorate is looking to tailor its transport planning to align better with community needs by launching a household survey.

Announcing its Household Travel Survey and linking with the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council, the Directorate said it would collect information about how, where and when members of selected households travelled over a single day.

It said the survey responses would be combined with those from other households to assist with transport planning across the ACT and Queanbeyan-Palerang communities.

“The surveys are conducted with households right across the ACT and Queanbeyan-Palerang region,” the Directorate said.

“Each household is randomly selected from a list of all household addresses in a neighbourhood,” it said.

“The selected households are asked to complete some questions about their household and themselves.”

The Directorate said each selected household would be asked to complete a travel diary for the specified days.

“By collecting all personal travel information – from walking the dog, through to interstate travel – the responses will help us to generate a complete picture of travel and activity in different areas – information that will be used to make planning decisions about roads, public transport and other facilities in and around your local community,” it said.

“We need information from as many different households as possible to better understand the complexity of travel.

“We need to hear from you, whether you make a lot of trips or hardly travel at all.”

The Directorate said all information collected through the survey was treated as confidential, “no data that allows the identification of the person or household will be released without the consent of the household”.
