The ACT Health Directorate is to expand the Emergency Department at Calvary Hospital and move more elective surgeries to it in the coming year as part of a program for future-proofing the Territory’s health care system.
Minister for Health and Wellbeing, Meegan Fitzharris said the number of operating theatres at Calvary Public Hospital Bruce would be increased for it to deal with more elective surgeries.
“The capacity of the Emergency Department will also grow, with more doctors and nurses to staff the new Emergency Department when its expansion is complete,” Ms Fitzharris said.
“As our city grows, so too does the demand for hospital and health services. This funding package will deliver a much-needed boost for Calvary Public Hospital.”
She said the package would fund 81 new doctors, nurses, administration and other health professionals at Calvary, including 46 new staff in the expanded Emergency Department when complete.
“It will expand Calvary’s capacity to perform elective surgery, with two new theatres being commissioned and 31 new staff to support the theatres as they come online — one theatre to come online in 2019-20 and the second theatre in 2020-21,” Ms Fitzharris said.
“We will ensure more urology services are delivered at Calvary Public Hospital with four new staff to meet the growing demand for urology surgery in the ACT,” she said.
