The Minister for City Services has announced that the first of three new nature play spaces for the ACT has been completed.
The Minister, Chris Steel said the new nature play space off Longerenong Street in Farrer provided Canberra’s children with exciting new opportunities to be active, grow and learn.
“We all know how important quality play opportunities are for children’s development, particularly their physical health and wellbeing and social skills,” Mr Steel said.
“This new nature play space has brought together the whole Farrer community to support great opportunities for children in an unprecedented way,” he said.
Mr Steel said the space featured timber climbing structures, a sand pit, tunnel and climbing cables and nest swing as well as a mountainbike circuit adjacent to the play space.
He said it included a range of different zones for children to explore, including a climb zone, a scramble zone, a hide zone, a loose parts zone and a rest zone.
“Local children were involved throughout the process from the very earliest concept designs for the playground and this has led to a great result,” Mr Steel said.
He thanked the Farrer Residents Association and Farrer’s youngest residents for shaping the design.
“I encourage the community to come down and try out the new play space and enjoy the other activities and performances on offer,” Mr Steel said.
He said the play space was officially opened on Sunday (20 October) with a festival organised by the local community.
