Melbourne flooding to go under review

Melbournians impacted by recent flooding have been invited to take part in an independent review into the October Maribyrnong River flooding event.

Managing Director at Melbourne Water, Nerina Di Lorenzo said the Maribyrnong River Flood Review was an independent technical examination into the causes and contributors to the 14 October flood.

Dr Di Lorenzo said the review included any potential impacts of the Flemington Racecourse Flood Wall, on the extent and duration of the event.

She said the Review would also look at the impact of prior works or activities in the urban catchment on flood levels and extent.

“An independent, open and transparent review should hear from as many voices as possible, which is why we’ve made it as simple as we can for anyone who wants to be involved to do so, particularly any impacted residents who may need a bit more time to consider their submission,” Dr Di Lorenzo said.

“Flood planning and management is constantly evolving so whatever the outcome of this review, we welcome the opportunity to learn and provide the best possible services for Victorians.”

She said Nick Wimbush, an independent expert in planning and the environment, had been appointed to lead the review.

“Since the Maribyrnong River flood event we’ve been out every day making essential repairs and clearing debris,” the Managing Director said.

“We’ve visited many impacted homes and businesses and seen the effects of this recent extreme weather first-hand,” she said.

“Our hearts and our support go out to those affected by flooding in Maribyrnong and across the state.”

Dr Di Lorenzo said submissions to the Review would be received until 17 March.
