Making Space

To South Australia, the home of the Brownlow this week where the Attorney-General has launched a bold new effort to ‘break the cycle of intergenerational domestic violence’ with a powerful new program aimed at supporting young parents aged between 12 and 25 who might believe that violence is the way of the world when it isn’t.

In a bid to attract the young people’s attentions the A-G unveiled the project declaring the wise words “domestic violence is too dangerous to inherit.”

“We must protect our children, and children’s children, from its insidious scourge,” she said revealing that the name of the program to be trusted with the task is the ‘Supporting Parents’ and Children’s Emotions’ program.

For the abbrevionerds amongst us, that reduces to the acronym SPACE, an unusual, if creative, title for such an important program.

Putting the Auk in Kus

While on the subject of interesting an intriguing shorthand names, let’s spare a second for the ingenious, innovative and inventive guru of nomenclature who snapped up the new international club Australia, Great Britain and the United States have chosen to adopt for their latest carefully crafted combination of companionship, the aching abbreviation ‘AUKUS’.

Setting aside AUKUS’s similarity to an awkward garden’s orchids, and with only five letters to juggle with, the Official Royal Acronymist did as good a job as anyone could, given that she/he must have wistfully dismissed an alternative and altruistic allegation.

Just a minor reshuffle of the letters and the name assumes a potentially more real-world pet patronymic, accepting that one of the triumphant triumvirate could find itself alone if the partnership perishes.

Should such a mishap materialise PS-sssst! sees a more apt and accurate acronym arriving in the then more appropriate form: U-SUKA!

Quad bikes on notice

To Western Australia now where the local consumer protection office has been hitting the road in recent years running up the kilometres trying to improve the safety of quad bikes which have a history of rolling on their drivers and causing serious injuries.

Declaring that a new round of new rules are to apply from October, the State’s Consumer Protection office laid out the deadly problem, saying the quads were “responsible for the deaths of 14 West Australians in the past decade.”

So this year all new and imported second-hand quad bikes will be required to test for lateral static stability; have a tag hanging that shows the angle the bike tips onto two wheels; and carrying a prominent warning label.

All for the good of the riders and all concerned to be congratulated.

Of particular mention is the cleverly creative headline hero who said it all when the consumer protector was announcing the move.

“End of the road for unsafe quad bikes” was the headline the headed the heady heights this week.

Congratulations to all.

Dead giveaway

To Rama Gaind’s benevolent bonus from the booty now with her weekly competitive competition consigning another complimentary collection of costless prizes to three lucky winners, this week taking home the thrilling movie DVD Kill Chain starring Nicholas Cage.

To take our place among the winners all we had to do was tell Rama the year Kill Chain was released – 2019 – and then be among the first three entries to emerge from the PS News Barrel of Booty when the judges open their gates of good luck.

This week the correct and lucky winners were Gregory C of the Australian Taxation Office, Johnathon N from the Western Australian Department of Justice and Rod M from Queensland’s Department of Health.

Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to everyone who joined in the fun, the prizes will be on their way to their new homes very soon.

For another chance to join Rama’s Army of worthy winners, all you need to do is visit her review of the Book Red Reflection at this PS News link and answer the quiz question or visit her other live review of the Book Armchair Explorer and answer her conundrum at this link.
