People in South Australia, particularly pregnant women, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems, have been advised not to consume five Harris Smokehouse products, following the detection of Listeria monocytogenes.

Director of Food Safety and Regulation at the Department for Health and Wellbeing, Karen Ferres said the Department’s Food Safety and Regulation Branch had received confirmation of Listeria monocytogenes present in Harris Smokehouse Everyday Smashed Smoked Salmon, Premium Smoked Salmon, Hot Smoked Ocean Trout, Hot Smoked Barramundi and Smoked Salmon Trimmings.

Ms Ferres said Harris Smokehouse had initiated a product recall and was working with SA Health to isolate the source of the contamination.

She said the recalled products were: Everyday Smashed Smoked Salmon 150g use-by dates from 20 to 28 July 2022; Premium Smoked Salmon 100g, 250g, 500g and sides use-by dates from 18 July to 8 August 2022; Hot Smoked Ocean Trout 150g use-by dates from 1 to 4 August 2022; Hot Smoked Barramundi 150g use-by dates from 28 July to 4 August 2022; and Smoked Salmon Trimmings 250g use-by dates from 25 to 29 July 2022.

Ms Ferres said the products were sold through independent food retailers including IGA and Foodland stores.

“While all affected products have now been removed from store shelves, anyone who has purchased these products is advised to not eat it, and either return it to the place of purchase, or discard it,” she said.

“Approximately 1,836 units of these products were sold to consumers.”

Ms Ferres said Listeria infection usually resulted in no or mild illness but could cause serious illness in vulnerable groups such as the elderly, immunosuppressed individuals, pregnant women and their unborn babies.

“Symptoms of Listeria infection include fever, chills, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, neck stiffness and gradual onset of confusion,” Ms Ferres said.
