The Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources (DISER) has released a four-year strategy to build a data-driven culture to inform policies and programs.
Secretary of DISER, David Fredericks said the Data Strategy 2021–2024 built on the achievements and lessons learnt from implementing previous data strategies.
“Data is a key part of everything we do,” Mr Fredericks said.
“This Strategy ushers in an exciting new phase in our evolution as a data-driven organisation,” he said.
“By the end of 2024, we will have advanced data activity in our Department to ensure the best evidence is readily available and consistently used.”
Mr Fredericks said the Strategy, to work in alignment with DISER’s Digital Strategy 2021–23, outlined how the Department would grow its data capabilities and resources, and foster innovative ways of working to ensure the best evidence was readily available and used.
The Secretary said key actions of the Strategy included improving employees’ data fluency; optimising data governance, management and security processes; embedding best-practice data analytics and visualisation; and increasing the use of location data.
“This will help us better use data to design and deliver evidence-based policies and programs tailored to the diverse circumstances and needs of all Australians,” he said.
“By giving our people the tools and skills they need to undertake data analytics and produce high-quality visualisations, we will be better able to communicate insights from data to design and deliver robust, evidence-based policies and programs.”
Mr Fredericks said increasing the use of location data would help DISER provide location-specific insights, tailor programs to the specific circumstances and needs of communities, and understand the impact of initiatives across the country.
