The City Renewal Authority is gearing up to launch community consultation on the design of a new public park at the Acton Waterfront.

In a statement, the Authority said the ACT Budget 2021-22 allocated $2.8 million to the design and consultation phase of the new 30,000 square metre public park.

“The new waterfront park will be adjacent to the boardwalk currently being constructed, on land reclaimed from Lake Burley Griffin,” the Authority said.

“It is likely to include event lawns, a new play space for all abilities and ages, barbecue areas and terraces overlooking the lake,” it said.

“Located close to Canberra’s City centre with unrestricted lake access, the park will build on the landscape character surrounding Lake Burley Griffin and provide an accessible and attractive public space for all Canberrans.”

The Authority said the design of the new park would be developed in close consultation with the community and stakeholders and would build on the extensive community input already received.

It said further information on when Canberrans could have a say on the park would be posted on its website and social media when consultation opened.

The Authority said community consultation and the development of a preliminary sketch plan was expected to begin next year, following the procurement of design consultant and targeted communication with stakeholders this year.
