The ACT State Emergency Service (ACTSES) has called on everyone across the Territory to start preparing now for the annual storm season.
Traditionally, the ACT experiences an increase in severe weather from September to March.
Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Mick Gentleman supported the call, saying there were a number of actions residents could do to help reduce the damage and cost that storms cause.
“The ACTSES says that a high number of jobs it attends each year could have been avoided if people had undertaken preparations,” Mr Gentleman said.
He said simple things people could do now to help reduce the damage caused by severe storms included keeping the yard tidy; cleaning gutters, downpipes and drains; trimming trees; fixing any damage on roofs; and checking their insurance was current and adequate.
“The ACT Emergency Services Agency publishes information and warnings before and during severe weather events,” Mr Gentleman said. “Visit www.esa.act.gov.au to keep up to date.
“If you need assistance during storms and flood, I urge you to contact the ACTSES on 135 500.”
He said there were 350 volunteers prepared to assist the community in times of need.
“In life threatening emergencies always call Emergency Triple Zero,” the Minister advised.
