Care urged on choice of baby products

The Attorney-General’s division Consumer and Business Services (CBS) has prepared advice for prospective parents on products that can help keep their baby safe — including those to avoid.

In a statement, the CBS said preparing for the arrival of a baby was an exciting time but it could be difficult for parents to know what’s really important when choosing products for the little one.

“Before you buy baby equipment and products, make sure the product is suitable based on your baby’s age, weight and developmental stage,” the CBS said.

“Using products that your baby has grown out of, or hasn’t grown into, can be dangerous.”

It said that if online purchases were being made “look at photographs and the listing description carefully — they should include warning labels and the age range the product is designed for”.

“If the supplier doesn’t provide this information, don’t buy the product, it’s not worth the risk,” the CBS said.

When using baby products always follow the instructions for safe assembly, use and maintenance of baby products, and read the product warnings and labels.”

It said extra checks were needed if second-hand products were to be used.

“Ensure the product meets current Australian mandatory standards, comes with instructions for safe assembly and use, and all its parts are in good working order.

“Also check that the product hasn’t been recalled,” the CBS said.

“Finally, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has launched a new resource called Your First Steps.

“It has more safety tips and advice about specific baby products such as cots, prams, change tables and dummies,” the Consumer and Business Services said.
