Belco clean-up still on for January storm

City Services has almost finished collecting debris from street verges in Belconnen following the January storm event.

In an update on the months-long clean-up, City Services said more than 2,000 tasks had been identified from requests made by the public through Fix My Street and completed clean-up audits.

“Our hard-working teams are also cleaning up debris from more recent storm events and windy conditions,” City Services said.

“Piles of branches and trees are being removed from green open spaces, although progress can be slow when the ground is wet because crews need to be careful not to damage the areas,” it said.

“Safety is our priority so decisions on where teams can operate will be made in light of forecast weather and rainfall.”

City Services said Evoenergy contractors were out in the community inspecting and trimming trees along transmission lines on public land that was damaged by the storm, in addition to their regular maintenance program to keep the electricity network safe.

The Directorate said the storm clean-up had prioritised high-use areas, such as roads, driveways/pathways and areas around shopping centres, followed by areas in front of residences, and then other areas on streets such as parkland and open spaces.

“We thank the community for their patience as crews work hard to clean up the region,” it said.

“To ensure they are as efficient as possible we ask that you do not approach crews while they are dealing with the clean-up,” City Services said.
