Bookings are now open for Belconnen residents to access free bulky waste collections as part of the expansion of bulky waste services.
Minister for City Services, Chris Steel said each household was entitled to receive one free collection per year of up to two cubic metres for a range of items such as furniture, household appliances, white goods and electrical equipment.
“Belconnen residents who are keen to save a trip to the tip can now benefit from the free collection of bulky household items like old furniture, tools and unwanted electronic equipment,” Mr Steel said.
“If you did some tidying over the Easter break, now’s a great time to get rid of those household items you no longer need,” he said.
“Many items find new homes and make their way back into our community.”
Mr Steel said the Territory’s partnerships with charities like GIVIT, the Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul helped ensure that vulnerable Canberrans benefited from recycled items.
The Minister said the bulky waste service had achieved a 38.8 per cent resource recovery rate, which contributed toward diverting waste from local landfill.
“Booking a collection is fast and easy; the online booking form takes less than five minutes to complete and shows the collection days available,” he said.
“Once booked, bulky waste items can be left in an accessible location inside your property boundary for collection, so you don’t even need to be home at the time.”
Mr Steel said residents across Canberra would be able to book a collection from 1 July when the service rolled out city-wide.
