Starting with a contribution to the cunningly clever column of cheekiness now with the courtesy of the Queensland Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy which last week announced the success of its State-wide renewable energy program.
Happily reporting that the program had encouraged large numbers of Queenslanders to install rooftop solar panels, the Department joyfully announced that more than 600,000 homes and small businesses had joined up, and were now enjoying the pleasure of lower power bills.
The Department won PS-sssst!’s hard won attention by adopting the wisdom of wittiness to choose for its official announcement the intellectually ingenious, hot and humorous headline: “Solar supply in Queensland is through the roof!”.
We thought that was very ‘tile-ish!
Inside story
Still in the monarchy that is our beloved Queensland, the State’s Corrective Services agency showed itself to be equally cheeky as the rest by letting the State’s sunshine-drenched community know it was keen to appoint new staff members to help run the State’s prisons.
To attract the potential new staff the Corrective Service’s optimistic recruiters have launched a new ‘alert’ which they call a BOLO – ‘Be On the Look Out’ – to find suitable candidates for the jobs which go by the name CCOs – Custodial Correctional Officers.
In its official announcement the Service called on Queenslanders to join in the BOLO and “take a look inside and see if they are fit enough to be a CCO.”
But with great respect PS-sssst! respectfully suggests the Service include the orphan letter ‘T’ from ‘Be On The Look Out’ so that BOLO becomes BOTLO to search for the applicants.
If nothing else, PS-sssst! suggests that at the very least, BOTLO is more likely to attract applicants who will find something interesting when they ‘take a look inside’.
Packing up
To one of the world’s success stories now with our very own Australia Post reporting that it banked $7,499 million in the past 12 months, making it one of the very few post offices in the world that returned a profit – $53.6 million in fact.
While every Australian can be genuinely proud of our postal service and the delivery services it provides, PS-sssst!’s usual warped interest has little to do with work but a lot to do with cleverness and creativity.
In a recent TV report, one of the Australian Post Officers with responsibility for ensuring the daily workload of millions of parcels are delivered to all parts of the country as quickly and efficiently as possible was interviewed, introduced by his official title, the Special Parcel Delivery Officer.
Such a title with such a task could lead to only one name: SPDO – pronounced Speedo!
Brilliant!
Giving it away
To Rama Gaind’s wonderful weekly giveaway now in which three free DVDs will be on their way to three lucky readers responding to Rama’s quizability by answering her easy quiz question.
Reviewing the film of the lawbreaking drama The Postcard Killings starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Cush Jumbo, Rama wanted to know the name of its co-author, who is also a Swedish crime writer.
The answer is Liza Marklund and the first three correct entries to emerge from the PS News Barrel of Booty were from Krystle S from WorkSafe Victoria, Johnathon N from the Western Australian Department of Justice, and Margaret S from the NSW Crown Solicitor’s Office.
Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to everyone who joined in. The DVD’s will be on their way very soon.
For another chance to join Rama’s Army of winners, simply try your luck on her current book giveaway of Work Wellbeing: How to Lead Thriving Teams at this PS News link and another book What’s Your Plan? at this link.
Good luck to everyone who does!
Positive development
And finally, sharp-eyed readers who received their email this week showing once again that PS News has gathered together another weekful of news, information advice and public service encouragement will have noticed the return of the ‘Personal Development’ and ‘Management Matters’ sections on their emails, linking them directly to the most-read sections of the Public Service’s most-read online newspaper.
While we would like to ‘wow’ our readers with a claim that the new arrangement is part of some magical managerial improvement aimed at enhancing the already managerial excellence of PS News, the true claim is much less ennobling. It was an error!
The ‘Personal Development’ section has always been a feature of PS News and always will be. Someone just took it out of the email to polish it one day and forgot to put it back.
But back it is and we hope you notice.
The good news is that both ‘Personal Development’ and ‘Management Matters’ haven’t missed a beat on the website – just the email – so there’s plenty on the website to catch up on if you haven’t visited for a while.
And for PS News Professional subscribers, you get the stories anyway so you haven’t missed a beat.
Until next week….
