The Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s news coverage has been placed in the top 10 of an international competition recognising journalism that pushes the boundaries of design and technology.
In the Society of News Design’s Best of Digital News Designs the ABC won a total of 16 awards for stories on the COVID-19 pandemic, the United States Presidential election, the Black Summer bushfires, drought and sexual assault, among others.
The awards, made by the Society of News Design, included two bronze medals, which are awarded to stories at the leading edge of craftsmanship or innovation, displaying an elevated level of execution, originality or degree of difficulty.
Entries must demonstrate technical mastery, aesthetic mastery, or both.
One of the medals was for the US Presidential election coverage, putting it on par with coverage by The New York Times, Politico and FiveThirtyEight.
A bronze medal was also awarded to Life as a Woman Locked Up in a Men’s Prison (pictured) by Background Briefing and the ABC’s Digital Story Innovation team.
Alex Palmer, from the Digital Story Innovation team, won an Award of Excellence for his individual portfolio, one of only three such awards handed out this year.
Awards of Excellence recognise outstanding visual storytelling that goes beyond mere technical or aesthetic competency.
