The City Renewal Authority is calling for feedback on the design concept for a new community centre in Haig Park, Braddon.
Chief Executive of the City Renewal Authority, Malcom Snow said that if approved, the former Haig Park depot would be converted into a flexible community centre able to host a variety of activities.
“The project builds on one of the key evaluation findings from the popular Haig Park Experiments program which was recognised by the Planning Institute of Australia last week with an ACT Award for Excellence,” Mr Snow said.
“In responding to what the community said, we want to repurpose the space in a way that meets their needs and aspirations,” he said.
Mr Snow said the Authority had undertaken community engagement over the past three years which informed the community centre design and identified perceptions, uses, and new ideas for the park.
“Building on the community’s feedback and ideas, we’ve created a simple but robust design that adapts and reuses the former building including flexible spaces able to host community activities such as gardening, painting, woodwork, playgroups, yoga, and much more,” he said.
“The centre is intended to open out to the landscape, extending into a semi-covered courtyard, which integrates the indoor spaces and surrounding park spaces.”
Mr Snow said sustainability elements featured strongly in the plans, including passive solar design; natural light and ventilation; water harvesting for irrigation; re-use of salvaged building materials; and low-carbon content building materials for external construction.
He said feedback on the design would be accepted until 26 November.
