The ACT State Emergency Service (ACTSES) is urging the Canberra community to start preparing now for the coming storm season.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Mick Gentleman said the ACTSES received over 1,300 requests for assistance last year with many of the jobs its volunteers responded to avoidable if homeowners had been prepared.

“The ACT usually experiences an increase in severe weather from September to March including strong winds and heavy rains that can cause fallen trees and flooding,” Mr Gentleman said.

He said to help stay safe and reduce the damage of severe storms Canberrans should keep yards tidy and secure items that could blow around in strong winds as well as clean gutters, downpipes and drains to prevent blockages, flooding and leaks.

He said householders should also trim trees and branches that could fall on homes or properties and fix any damage to roofs, including broken or missing tiles.

Mr Gentleman advised members of the community to check their insurance policies to ensure they were current and adequate.

“We have over 360 active volunteers in the ACT who are trained and prepared to support the community this storm season and I thank them for their efforts,” Mr Gentleman said.
