The Minister for City Services, Chris Steel has announced that works expanding the City Bus Interchange and introducing new traffic arrangements in Alinga Street have been completed.

Mr Steel said two new bus shelters had been installed on platforms One and Two on Alinga Street west of Northbourne Avenue, providing protection from the elements while also improving the overall amenity and appearance of the area.

He said new bike rails had also been installed.

“These works follow on from the expansion of the City Interchange undertaken to complement the introduction of the new bus network and integration with Light Rail,” Mr Steel said.

“These previous works included repairs to the road surface on Alinga Street as well as removal and repositioning of some street furniture.”

He said the completed work also complemented the upgrades to the road verge on Northbourne Avenue and the Alinga Street light rail stop.

“Expanding the city interchange across to Alinga Street West will ensure better integration with the Alinga Street light rail stop for customers interchanging to bus services,” the Minister said.

“As part of these works, Alinga Street is now open to bus and local traffic only between Northbourne Avenue and Moore Street/West Row,” he said.

“This will improve access to public transport for residents while also improving safety for pedestrians, cyclists, buses and motorists on Northbourne Avenue.”
