Kalgulup Regional Park’s Mangrove Cove now features a new 190-metre-long wheelchair and pram-accessible boardwalk.
The boardwalk, which follows the path of the old one, snakes through a population of white mangroves in the Leschenault Inlet and connects to an 820-metre dual-use pathway.
“The new boardwalk will allow Bunbury’s iconic mangroves to be accessed and viewed in a whole new way, which will be fantastic for visitors and locals alike,” Bunbury MLA Don Punch said.
“We are blessed with a stunning natural environment in Bunbury but the uniqueness of our white mangrove is really something special.”
The boardwalk provides greater accessibility to people with wheelchairs or prams and includes interpretive signing to provide insight into changes to the park’s landscape over time as well as Noongar cultural values, local birdlife and information about the park’s beautiful white mangrove trees.
Environment Minister Reece Whitby said: “Providing new and improved facilities that allow more visitors to safely enjoy Bunbury’s stunning Mangrove Cove has been a priority of the Cook Labor Government, and I’m happy to see this work is now completed.”
Kalgulup Regional Park was started by the Cook Government as part of its Plan for Our Parks initiative. This led to a 28 percent increase in the conservation estate of Western Australia, with more than 6.5 million hectares of water and land under state protection.
“It’s in keeping with the Cook Labor Government’s commitment to invest in and improve visitor facilities in parks throughout WA so that more tourists and locals can enjoy what our state’s environment has to offer,” Mr Whitby said.
Some work is expected to continue on the project until April, including new seating. To keep up to date on Kalgulup Regional Park, visit www.dbca.wa.gov.au/bunbury-parks.
