The Northern Territory Government has confirmed there will be no immediate changes to the Barramundi Fishery for commercial fishing operators and recreational anglers as the 2025 season approaches.

Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries and Minister for Recreational Fishing Gerard Maley said the Country Liberal Party (CLP) Government was committed to making good on its election promise of phasing out gillnets in the commercial Barramundi Fishery within this current term of office.

“We are taking decisive action while ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Barramundi Fishery and economic benefits for the Territory,” Mr Maley said.

“An advisory group will be established early this year, bringing together experts from all fishing sectors to provide clear and consolidated advice on revising the Barramundi Fishery management plan.

“This process will ensure all stakeholders have a voice in shaping the future of this vital industry.”

During the transition, the Barramundi Fishery will continue under the existing managerial arrangements, their main priorities being monitoring and compliance.

“On-water monitoring and the use of tools such as the Vessel Monitoring System and the Threatened Endangered and Protected Species Strategy will ensure the fishery operates sustainably during this period,” Mr Maley said.

Over the next few years, a Barramundi Fishery management plan will be developed, with public feedback and consultation included.
