Only the minimum number of staff are to attend Queensland schools in order to prevent the further spreading of the COVID-19 virus.

Minister for Education, Grace Grace said that while Queenslanders had done well to keep COVID-19 at bay until now, the Delta variant was a different situation that needed to be tackled in a different way.

“Principals are working with all of their staff to enable them to make staffing decisions suitable for their school,” Ms Grace said.

“The number of staff at each school will be based on the number of children in attendance and student learning needs.”

She said options such as the rotation of staff on school sites were being considered and, under this arrangement, staff not at schools would be working from home.

“The Chief Health Officer has also asked that students of essential workers or vulnerable children in attendance at schools should be arranged in small groups of five to 10 wherever possible to minimise any potential health risks,” Ms Grace said.

“This is particularly important in high schools.”

Ms Grace said remote learning was under way.

“Our schools are ready for the current stay-at-home advice and our planning and responses to COVID-19 over the past 16 months have put us in a strong position,” she said.

“I thank everyone in our school communities for their hard work, flexibility and cooperation over the last few days,” Ms Grace said.
