Women to raise the tone of sports calling

The Office for Women in Sport and Recreation has announced that the new Women in Sports Broadcasting Program is to address the lack of gender diversity in the broadcasting industry.

Minister for Community Sport, Ros Spence said the first round of the program was now open for applications, giving women who had an interest in sports media and broadcasting the opportunity to learn and gain experience from a team of broadcasting experts.

Ms Spence said the program was being offered through the Change Our Game initiative and would help women determine where their interests were and identify their next steps.

“The program comes off the back of the successful Making the Call pilot program held over the past 12 months, which supported 36 women from across the State to follow their dream of a career in sports broadcasting,” she said.

Ms Spence said the industry experts who were to guide the participants included international cricket commentator Mel Jones, TV executive Dave Barham and sports journalists as well as broadcasters Kelli Underwood, Andy Maher, Daisy Pearce and Tess Armstrong.

She said past graduates of Making the Call included Marnie Vinall (pictured) who was selected to be part of Channel 7’s coverage team for the Tokyo Olympic Games and who said the program gave her invaluable information and insight into the sports broadcasting and media space.

Ms Spence said a further round of the program would be offered in 2022 for women seeking to make their first steps into the sports broadcasting industry.

Applications for women interested in joining the program is to close on Monday 20 September and further information can be accessed at this PS News link.
