The Federal and Western Australian Governments have released the latest vision for the WACA Ground Improvement Project, aimed at transforming the East Perth venue into a community, sporting and tourist hub.
The designs mark a major milestone for the project, following the $30 million funding commitments from the two Governments, $11 million from the WACA plus a $4 million contribution from Cricket Australia.
The final design illustrates how the original home of cricket in the State will become a sustainable boutique community and sporting venue, capable of hosting 10,000 people, to bring vibrancy to the East Perth precinct while honouring the rich history of the ground.
The facility will support community use year-round, adding much-needed amenity for the growing central business district population.
Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure, Paul Fletcher said the WACA revitalisation was part of a wider project under the $1.5 billion City Deal, adding much-needed local assets like an aquatic centre and an indoor sports facility.
“Perth will benefit for generations to come from this game-changing investment in education, culture, jobs and sport,” Mr Fletcher said.
State Minister for Planning, Rita Saffioti described the project as a “once-in-a-lifetime transformation of Perth CBD”.
“The WACA itself will become a fantastic community facility, complete with a long-desired aquatic centre and new recreational space for the growing population,” Ms Saffioti said.
